DUNS Number for a Digital Marketing Company: When You Need One and How to Get It

TL;DR

The short version of this article

  • A DUNS number is a nine-digit business identifier issued by Dun & Bradstreet, used by large companies and platforms to verify that a business exists.
  • A digital marketing company needs one mainly for Apple Developer and Google Play organisation accounts, enterprise and multinational vendor onboarding, and some export or financing checks; it is not required for Indian government tenders or US federal contracts, which use Udyam/GSTIN and the UEI respectively.
  • Apply directly at Dun & Bradstreet: free with a 30-business-day wait in the US, paid with faster processing in India; never pay a third party to "register" it for you.

A DUNS number (Data Universal Numbering System) is a unique nine-digit identifier that Dun & Bradstreet assigns to a business location. It is used by large companies, app stores and some lenders to confirm that a business exists at a given address and to look up its credit file. For a digital marketing company the question is not whether a DUNS number is impressive but whether anything you want to do requires one. This guide lists exactly when it does, how to apply in India and abroad, and the mistakes that cost agencies money.

What a DUNS number is, and what it is not

Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) maintains a database of several hundred million businesses worldwide. Each legal entity, and each separate location of it, gets a nine-digit D-U-N-S number that stays with it for life. Alongside the number, D&B keeps a credit file (payment history, size, ownership) that other companies can buy a report on.

It is not a licence, a tax registration or a government ID. In India your business is identified by PAN, GSTIN, CIN or LLPIN, and Udyam registration for MSMEs; a DUNS number sits alongside those, not instead of them.

When a digital marketing company actually needs a DUNS number

SituationDUNS needed?Notes
Apple Developer Program as an organisationYesApple requires a D-U-N-S number matching the legal entity before it approves an organisation account
Google Play Console organisation accountYesRequired for organisation developer accounts since 2023
Vendor onboarding at large or multinational clientsOftenProcurement teams run D&B checks on new suppliers, especially for contracts over a threshold
Microsoft Partner, some ad-tech and SaaS partner programmesSometimesUsed to verify the company during enrolment
Export documentation, some trade finance and foreign paymentsSometimesBanks and buyers may ask for it as part of KYC
Indian government tenders (GeM, state portals)NoThese rely on GSTIN, PAN, Udyam and turnover certificates
US federal contracts (SAM.gov)NoSince April 2022 SAM.gov uses its own Unique Entity ID; DUNS is no longer required
Working with Indian SMEs and startupsNoClients ask for GST, PAN and a portfolio, not a DUNS

For an agency that publishes client apps, the Apple and Google requirements are the usual trigger. For an agency chasing enterprise or international clients, procurement checks are. If neither applies, you can skip it with no loss.

Benefits worth having (and the ones that are oversold)

Real benefits:

  • Passing platform and vendor checks without delay. Apple’s organisation enrolment, in particular, stalls for weeks if the DUNS record does not match the legal name and address exactly.
  • A business credit file that international clients and lenders can check, which helps when you invoice overseas or apply for trade finance.
  • Consistent identity across D&B-linked systems such as supplier portals.

Oversold claims: a DUNS number does not improve your Google rankings, does not by itself win tenders, and is not a certification of quality. If a sales pitch promises any of those, it is selling you something else.

How to get a DUNS number in India

  1. Go to Dun & Bradstreet India’s D-U-N-S Number page (dnb.co.in) and choose the registration option.
  2. Provide the legal entity name exactly as on the certificate of incorporation or LLP agreement, registered address, PAN, CIN or LLPIN, GSTIN, director or partner details, and a working phone and email.
  3. Upload the supporting documents requested (incorporation certificate, PAN, address proof).
  4. Pay the fee. D&B India charges for issuance, with a standard turnaround and a faster paid option; the current prices are on their site and change, so check before paying.
  5. Receive the number by email, usually within one to five business days for the standard option.

Keep the confirmation email; you will need the number and the exact registered name when enrolling with Apple or Google, and both verify it against D&B’s record.

How to get one in the US and other countries

In the United States, D&B issues D-U-N-S numbers free of charge through dnb.com, with a wait of up to 30 business days; a paid expedited option exists. Apple also provides a free look-up and request form for developers. Most other countries follow the same free-with-wait model through their local D&B partner. If your Indian agency has a US entity (as Ixoric does in Wyoming), each entity needs its own number.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Paying a “consultant” to register it. Several agencies charge several times D&B’s fee for filling in the same form. Apply directly.
  • Name mismatch. “Ixoric Technologies LLP” and “Ixoric Technologies” are different records to Apple. Use the legal name exactly.
  • Registering the wrong entity. If a director applies as a sole proprietor, the number will not match the LLP or private limited company that signs the Apple or client contract.
  • Letting the record go stale. Update D&B when the address, directors or legal name change; a stale record fails vendor checks years later.
  • Expecting it to replace Udyam or GST. Indian clients and portals will still ask for those.

Maintaining your record and credit file

Once issued, the number is permanent. The credit file behind it is built from trade references and public data, so a company that pays suppliers on time and keeps its public filings current (MCA annual returns, GST) will have a cleaner report. You can request your own D&B report to check for errors, and D&B has a process to correct them. There is no need to pay for ongoing “monitoring” unless you are actively bidding on contracts where buyers pull your report.

Where the DUNS number fits in building a credible agency

Platform checks are only one part of looking trustworthy to a client. The things prospective clients actually inspect are published case studies with real numbers, named people with verifiable credentials, and reviews. That is why our own site leads with case studies and a founder page rather than certificates. If you are setting up or growing an agency and want to see how we structure our digital marketing services and proof, those pages are a useful template.

FAQ: DUNS numbers for digital marketing companies

Is a DUNS number mandatory in India?

No. No Indian law or government portal requires it. It becomes necessary only when a specific platform (Apple, Google Play) or client asks for it.

How much does a DUNS number cost in India?

D&B India charges a fee for issuance, with a higher fee for faster processing; the amounts are published on dnb.co.in and change from time to time. In the US it is free with a wait of up to 30 business days.

How long does it take?

In India, usually one to five business days after documents are verified, depending on the option chosen. In the US, up to 30 business days for the free route.

Can a freelancer or sole proprietor get a DUNS number?

Yes, as long as the business has a name, an address and a phone number. For Apple, however, individual developers do not need one; it is only required for organisation accounts.

Does a DUNS number help with SEO or Google rankings?

No. Google does not use it as a signal. Rankings come from content, links and technical quality; see our SEO services page for what actually moves them.
